'When Croatia began the process of independence in the early 1990s, dissolving its association with the crumbling Yugoslavia, the nation turned to academic, designer and artist Miroslav Sutej to design its new flag, bank notes and coat of arms. And what is a nation without a football kit? Nothing, obviously, so Sutej was drafted in to design that too, and came up with Croatia's iconic chequerboard pattern, first used in October 1990 in a match against the USA. This version from a few years later was the best shirt at Euro 96. Don't argue' - OOF Gallery
